BAHM Launches New Research Webinar Series. The first event will be “Engaging Private Practitioners to Improve TB Diagnosis and Treatment in Urban India: Models and Analysis” by Sarang Deo, Professor and Area Leader of Operations Management Executive Director, Max Institute of Healthcare Management Indian School of Business. The webinar will be on December 13, 2022 at 10:00 AM CT.
India is home to a quarter of the 8.6 million new tuberculosis cases diagnosed globally each year, in part because of the poor quality of TB diagnoses and treatment in India’s private healthcare sector. To address this issue, The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation funded a pilot “private sector engagement model” in two cities, Mumbai and Patna. Prof. Deo, who helped design the pilot and studied its impact, will discuss:
- The operational and economic modelling that informed the pilot design
- The impact of the pilot on changes in the diagnostic test ordering behavior of the private providers
- Insights from the pilot’s scale-up across more than 30 cities in India
- An alternate model that uses community health workers and informal healthcare providers in rural India
