The 2024 Global BAHM Case Competition was held February 8-9, 2024 at the University of Colorado Denver. Student teams proposed solutions to the workforce shortages challenging health systems across the globe, offering them the opportunity to work collaboratively on a timely topic, to network with peers across the globe, and to compete for cash prizes.

2024 Case Competition Winners:
University of Minnesota (First Place): Angela Botiba, DivineMercy Bakare, and Erika Schlosser.
The team proposed a plan for “Revitalizing Employee Network and Ensuring Workforce Stability at GoodHealth”. They detailed the challenges, detected the issue and proposed a holistic approach to resolve the problem: increase senior leadership engagement and presence, invest in compensation and benefits, revise staffing structures and reporting mechanisms, and create career mobility opportunities. This strategic approach seeks to improve patient care, enhance employee satisfaction, and create a more stable and resilient workforce, contributing to the long-term success and sustainability of GoodHealth.
University of Toronto, Rotman School of Management (Second Place): Yifan Cao, Sabrina Hundal, Shabdit Shah, and Priya Thakkar.
The team presented solutions for recruiting and retaining emergency department nurses at a Health Sciences Centre. In the aftermath of the pandemic, many healthcare institutions are facing a health human resources crisis. The team provided a solution to address this issue in the short and long-term, they proposed a recruitment and retention strategies that rapidly expand on the current model. Over the long-term, the team proposed leveraging the rapid advancements in healthcare technology. By combining short-term recruitment tactics with long-term retention strategies, the HSC can mitigate workforce challenges, enhance the work environment for its ED nurses, and ensure quality provision of care for all.

The team proposed a plan for Jamison Memorial Hospital (JMH), to maintain workforce levels at status quo due to poaching from competing private healthcare systems, high rates of staff retirement due to pandemic-related burnout, and use of expensive travel nursing. The team’s strategic plan outlines profession-specific solutions to recruitment and retainment of physicians and nurses, as well as general employee proposals. The team also aims to improve nursing recruitment and retention by partnering with local nursing colleges to offer expanded work opportunities for nursing students.
