SUMMARY:University of Pennsylvania: Reimagining a Sustainable Health Care Safety Net
DESCRIPTION:The Affordable Care Act was supposed to greatly enhance the nation’s safety net by expanding health coverage. It partially succeeded but fell short as 12 states still decline to expand Medicaid\, a key facet of the law. The pandemic laid bare more gaps in the safety net\, as hunger\, unemployment and the toll from the disease rose. But it was also a time for experimentation that saw the rise of telehealth and other services. So how can the safety net be reimagined in this political moment? States continue to be a key source of innovation. Our panelists discuss how the safety net could be structured and better funded to deal better with the next health catastrophe.

SUMMARY:Johns Hopkins Carey Business School: The Joys and Sorrows of Incorporating Artificial Intelligence into Healthcare Delivery
DESCRIPTION:Artificial intelligence (AI) has become an integral part of healthcare delivery\, as evidenced by the FDA’s approval of more than 300 medical AI systems by June 2021. Many people now believe that\, “AI will not replace physicians\, but physicians who use AI will replace physicians who don’t.” Yet\, incorporating AI into healthcare delivery calls for a rethink and redesign of day-to-day workflows\, an undertaking that most healthcare systems are not ready for. This webinar features leading experts who have worked with clinicians in implementing AI in clinical practice to discuss the challenges and opportunities for business and AI researchers\, as well as clinical practitioners.

SUMMARY:Stanford University: 2022 HAI Fall Conference on AI in the Loop: Humans in Charge
DESCRIPTION:Human-in-the-loop artificial intelligence generally refers to AI where humans are involved at various points throughout the research\, design\, training\, testing or decision making process. During this conference\, we hope to challenge participants to rethink this phrase and consider a future where humans remain at the center of all AI technologies. AI should effectively communicate and collaborate with people to augment their capabilities and make their life better and more enjoyable. Humans are not simply “in-the-loop”. Humans are in charge\, AI is “in-the-loop”.

SUMMARY:Johns Hopkins Carey Business School: Organizational Objectives and Employee Health
DESCRIPTION:What responsibility do employers have to the health and well-being of their employees? This question has grown in importance with COVID-19\, especially as the workplace has expanded to include working from home. American businesses have long offered workplace and employee wellness programs\, but evidence of improving\, maintaining\, and fostering health is limited. On the one hand\, employees are demanding more and better resources for health promotion\, particularly with respect to mental health. On the other hand\, human resource departments are traditionally viewed as a cost center\, and the incentives to promote health from a business perspective are murky. Do businesses have an ethical obligation to promote a healthy workforce? Are there instances in which the profit motive and employee health align? What is the ROI on workplace wellness programs? Does evidence of ROI incite organizations to act?

SUMMARY:University of Pennsylvania: Fixing America’s Broken Maternal Health System
DESCRIPTION:Maternal mortality in the U.S. is higher than in any other developed nation\, with substantial inequities in maternal health outcomes. Systemic barriers\, including poor access to care and inadequate health care coverage\, together with a failure to recognize\, respect and listen to patients of color\, are at the root of this crisis. Our expert panel will touch on innovations in health care delivery. We’ll also discuss what a systemic revamp would look like – one that encompasses health care delivery systems\, insurers\, payment\, and more.  Join us to discuss what a high functioning system could look like\, how it could be financed\, and what it will take to get there.

SUMMARY:Delivering High Value Employee Health Care: How Business Can Do Better
DESCRIPTION:About half of Americans get their health insurance through their employer\, or a family member’s employer. But the cost is high—and the quality uneven. Employers have a lot of power in the health care market. How can they wield it to improve the value of health care services delivered to their employees and families? This event\, kicking off the 2022-‘23 series for the Hopkins Business of Health Initiative\, will look at opportunities and challenges now\, and in the years ahead.

SUMMARY:340B Program Perspectives: Insight on Current Contract Pharmacy Issues
DESCRIPTION:The federal 340B drug discount program provides certain providers with deep discounts on some outpatient drugs. Last year the 340B program saw substantial growth amidst uncertainty related to the use of contract pharmacies. The health care data and analytics firm\, IQVIA\, reported that in 2021\, 340B program sales reached $93.6 billion and grew 15.9% year-on-year. However\, last year more pharmaceutical manufacturers announced or implemented a change to not offer the 340B discount to drugs dispensed under contract pharmacy arrangements in certain cases. The growth\, policy\, and legal issues of the 340B program are significant not only to impacted health care providers and pharmaceutical manufacturers\, but also to other stakeholders such as health plans\, data vendors\, and even Congress. \nThis virtual symposium hosted by the Business Advancement Center for Health (BACH) in partnership with Leavitt Partners\, will review the latest legal and policy questions under discussion in the Courts and Congress and explain how impacted stakeholders are responding to the ever-evolving 340B program landscape.

SUMMARY:Allocating Scarce Medical Resources: Equity and Justice Concerns
DESCRIPTION:Crisis standards of care are guidelines that inform health care systems’ decisions around access to scarce medical resources. This includes access to medical beds\, ventilators\, medications\, dialysis\, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation\, and other resources. The concept has received increased attention as the COVID-19 pandemic has challenged our health care systems. \nThese guidelines pose concerns about the equitable provision of care. Chief among these concerns is the potential impact on vulnerable populations\, including disabled individuals\, marginalized populations\, and elders. The webinar will bring together experts working in medicine\, law\, and ethics for a discussion of the concerns around equity and justice for these standards.
