SUMMARY:Stanford University 4th Annual Spinal Muscular Atrophy Conference: Clinical Complexities and Gaps of Care in the Genetic Treatment Era – Lessons Learned Treating SMA
DESCRIPTION:Continuing medical education and training in this era of disease-modifying treatments for the evolving SMA phenotype requires thoughtfulness for the most optimal outcomes.  With the implementation of the most current newborn screening guidelines\, clinicians managing individuals with SMA require up-to-date knowledge on the treatment landscape\, long-term outcomes\, and clinical-decision making.  We intend to continue to enhance the knowledge and understanding of healthcare providers including physicians\, specialists\, physical therapists\, occupational therapists\, speech language pathologists\, nurses\, and providers not affiliated with specialized centers\, in the clinical decision-making and medical and rehabilitative management of individuals with SMA.

SUMMARY:340B Program Perspectives: Insight on Current Contract Pharmacy Issues
DESCRIPTION:The federal 340B drug discount program provides certain providers with deep discounts on some outpatient drugs. Last year the 340B program saw substantial growth amidst uncertainty related to the use of contract pharmacies. The health care data and analytics firm\, IQVIA\, reported that in 2021\, 340B program sales reached $93.6 billion and grew 15.9% year-on-year. However\, last year more pharmaceutical manufacturers announced or implemented a change to not offer the 340B discount to drugs dispensed under contract pharmacy arrangements in certain cases. The growth\, policy\, and legal issues of the 340B program are significant not only to impacted health care providers and pharmaceutical manufacturers\, but also to other stakeholders such as health plans\, data vendors\, and even Congress. \nThis virtual symposium hosted by the Business Advancement Center for Health (BACH) in partnership with Leavitt Partners\, will review the latest legal and policy questions under discussion in the Courts and Congress and explain how impacted stakeholders are responding to the ever-evolving 340B program landscape.

SUMMARY:Allocating Scarce Medical Resources: Equity and Justice Concerns
DESCRIPTION:Crisis standards of care are guidelines that inform health care systems’ decisions around access to scarce medical resources. This includes access to medical beds\, ventilators\, medications\, dialysis\, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation\, and other resources. The concept has received increased attention as the COVID-19 pandemic has challenged our health care systems. \nThese guidelines pose concerns about the equitable provision of care. Chief among these concerns is the potential impact on vulnerable populations\, including disabled individuals\, marginalized populations\, and elders. The webinar will bring together experts working in medicine\, law\, and ethics for a discussion of the concerns around equity and justice for these standards.
